Awards, Grants and Prizes

All award applications have now closed

 

Nominations are invited for awards to support basic, clinical and scientific research work into the causes, treatment and prevention of hypertension and associated cardiovascular diseases. In the spirit of the senior awards, as recognition of outstanding merit by their peers, it should be understood that individuals should neither nominate themselves nor lobby to be nominated.

The Awards Committee ssists with the selection of awards to individuals, groups or institutions honoured by the Society. This Committee is chaired by the President of the Society (or nominee) and has at least four other members of whom one is the Secretary of the Society. The Awards Committee will assess applications equally on their merits and eligibility.

Terms and Conditions
The decision of the Awards Committee of the International Society of Hypertension is final and no correspondence about their decisions will be entered into.

Nominations for previous winners of any other senior award are not normally received, but might be
considered if there is an outstanding independent case for this award.

The Awards Committee has the right not to make any awards if no appropriate applications are received from suitable candidates.

The International Society of Hypertension has the right not to pay an award in full if the person concerned fails to meet all of the terms on which the award is made.

Awards are presented at the Hypertension Sydney 2012.

AstraZeneca Award

Individual Award

Purpose: The award was endowed by Astra Pharmaceuticals AB in 1979. It shall be presented at Hypertension Sydney 2012 on the recommendation of the Awards Committee of the ISH to a distinguished investigator responsible for outstanding work related to clinical pharmacology and therapy of arterial hypertension.

Criteria: Distinguished investigator responsible for outstanding work related to clinical pharmacology and therapy of arterial hypertension.

Eligibility: Must be a member of the ISH. Nominations for previous winners of any other senior award are not normally received, but might be considered if there is an outstanding independent case for this award.

Officers of the Scientific Council of the ISH and members of the ISH Awards Committee are not eligible to be nominated. Exceptionally, other members of the ISH Council may be eligible.

Boehringer Ingelheim Developing World Award

Up to two awards may be given

Purpose: This award is for a researcher in the developing world* who has done outstanding work in the region.
(*based on the resource poor countries, zones and territories defined by HINARI)

Criteria: The nomination should include full curriculum vitae, a short resume of his/her research, no more than 5 publications, which the applicant considers as important publications and a letter of support from the applicant's mentor. The awardee will be expected to submit an abstract of his/her research for Hypertension Sydney 2012, via the online submission site.

Eligibility: Must be a member of the ISH. Nominations for previous winners of any oher senior award are not normally received, but might be considered if there is an outstanding independent case for this award.

Officers of the Scientific Council of the ISH and members of the ISH Awards Committee are not eligible to be nominated. Exceptionally, other members of the ISH Council may be eligible.

Distinguished Members Award

Individual Award

Members who have given outstanding service to the ISH and have made unusually distinguished contributions to experimental and clinical research in hypertension may be nominated to be distinguished Members of the Society.

Franz Volhard Award and Lectureship for Outstanding Research

Individual Award

Purpose: This award and lectureship was endowed by Farbwerke Hoechst in 1972 to commemorate the centenary of the birth of Franz Volhard.

Criteria: The award shall be made at Hypertension Sydney 2012 to a person or persons who, in the opinion of the ISH Awards Committee of the ISH, shall have initiated in the field of hypertension or in a related discipline, a concept which remains of current interest. The recipient shall be invited to deliver to the ISH a lecture on the topic for which the award is bestowed. Award nominators must clearly state the concept that the nominee has initiated which remains of current interest, and provide supporting evidence.

Eligibility: Must be a member of the ISH. Nominations for previous winners of any other senior award are not normally received, but might be considered if there is an outstanding independent case for this award.

Officers of the Scientific Council of the ISH and members of the ISH Awards Committee are not eligible to be nominated. Exceptionally, other members of the ISH Council may be eligible.

The Stevo Julius Award Funded by NOVARTIS

Individual Award

Criteria: This award will be given to a person or persons demonstrating exceptional and continuous commitment to the dissemination of information, knowledge and skills in the field of hypertension to:
(a) general public;
(b) medical community;
(c) specialists in the hypertension field, and;
(d) to investigators involved in hypertension research.

Eligibility: Must be a member of the ISH or be willing to join the Society following award. Nominations for previous winners of any other senior award are not normally received, but might be considered if there is an outstanding independent case for this award.

Officers of the Scientific Council of the ISH and members of the ISH Awards Committee are not eligible to be nominated. Exceptionally, other members of the ISH Council may be eligible.

Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research – Young Investigator Travel Awards

International Society of Hypertension Scientific Meeting

The Foundation for High Blood Pressure Research is pleased to announce that it will provide Travel Awards to young Australian researchers presenting their work at the ISH Scientific Meeting in Sydney. Individual awards will be up to $2,000.00 as determined by the Foundation.

The following conditions will apply:

Eligibility
The awards are available to PhD students and postdoctoral researchers with no more than five years’ experience post-PhD. Preference will be given to members of the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia.

How to apply
Applicants should send a letter of application to the address below with a copy of the abstract(s) submitted to the Sydney Organising Committee and provide evidence that the abstract has been accepted. Applicants should also provide a brief (2 pages maximum) curriculum vitae and a letter from the Head of their department or research institution that confirms their status as a Young Investigator as defined above.

Judging procedures
Following receipt of this information the Trustees of the Foundation will make a decision on the number and value of the Travel Awards to be offered.

The Foundation encourages all applicants to seek other sources of funding to attend this meeting.

Awards and Grants Based on Abstract Submission – Now closed

Student Travel Grants

Student travel grants of up to A$1,000 will be available on a competitive basis to presenting authors who are undergraduate or research higher degree students. Please indicate when submitting your abstract if you would like to apply for a travel grant.

APSH Young Investigator Awards

  • $1000 and complimentary registration for Hypertension Sydney 2012 for International Young Investigators from the Asia Pacific Region
  • $500 and complimentary registration Hypertension Sydney 2012 for Australian Young Investigators

All applicants for the APSH Young Investigator Awards must submit an abstract to be considered for the award. The authors of the top abstracts will be selected to compete for the Best Oral Presentation Prize during the meeting.

The APSH will nominate judges to oversee the oral presentations and select a winner.
The APSH Member Societies include Australia, China, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Japan, Korea, Malaysia, Nepal, New Zealand, Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan and Thailand.

Please select the "APSH Awards" check box when submitting your abstract to have it considered for this award.

Criteria: Young Investigators in general must be less than 35 years. Exception can be made under appropriate circumstances.

Austin Doyle Award Funded by Servier Australia

This award was established to make the contribution of Austin Doyle, Past‑President of the ISH and Founding Chairman of the High Blood Pressure Research Council of Australia.

Criteria: It will be awarded to a graduate, who is within 5 years of post-graduate qualification. The
recipient will be judged to have given the best original presentation relevant to clinical medicine at
Hypertension Sydney 2012.

Eligibility: Must be willing to join the ISH as a member following nomination/receipt of award.
Previous winners of this award are not eligible for nomination a second time.

ISH International Forum Poster Prizes

ISH International Forum Poster Prizes will be awarded at Hypertension Sydney 2012 in:

• Basic science
• Clinical science (Prizes in this category will be supported by Daiichi-Sankyo)
• Population science

Prizes in all three categories will be awarded to each of the Regions that comprise the ISH International Forum. These regions are:

• Africa
• Asia & Australasia
• Eastern Europe & Middle East
• Central & South America
• Western Europe & North America

All poster abstract submissions will be considered for these prestigious awards and will be selected by an independent judging panel. The quality of the submitted abstract and especially the quality of the poster presentation will be the basis for the awards.

These prizes represent a strong and ongoing commitment by the ISH through the International Forum to recognise and reward the best research from all across the globe.

ISH New Investigator Oral and Poster Presentation Awards, Supported by Daiichi-Sankyo

These awards were established in 2012 to encourage New Investigators and recognise excellence in scientific contribution at the ISH Biennial Scientific Meetings.

Criteria: They will be awarded at Hypertension Sydney 2012 to New Investigators judged from a
group of finalists to have given the best oral and poster presentations. Finalists will be selected from
among eligible presenters on the basis of the scores of their abstracts allocated to oral and poster
presentations.

Eligibility: The presenting and responsible author must be a New Investigator who is undertaking a
research higher degree or is within 10 years of graduation with a doctoral or equivalent qualification.
Evidence of research higher degree student status or the date of graduation must be provided at the
time of submission.

Jirí Widimský Sr. Award(s)

The Czech Foundation of Hypertension is pleased to announce the Jirí Widimský Sr. Award(s) will be presented at Hypertension Sydney 2012.

To be presented to three distinguished, young investigators (not older than 35 years) who have performed promising research in the field of clinical or experimental hypertension and presented on this subject at the respective ISH and/or ESH meeting(s). The Awards presented at ISH meetings are designed for investigators working in countries suffering from economic hardship.

The award(s) have been presented at ISH and ESH meetings since 2002 to young investigators from developing countries. Recipients of the award will receive a certificate and a cheque for USD2,000.

Please select the “Jiri Widimsky Sr Awards” check box when submitting your abstract to be considered for this award.

Criteria: To be considered a young investigator you must be less than 35 years of age as of September 30, 2012 (the first day of Hypertension Sydney 2012). The recipient may not have received any other from Hypertension Sydney 2012.

Hypertension Canada ISH 2012 Young Investigator Awards – Now closed

Hypertension Canada is pleased to offer the Hypertension Canada ISH 2012 Young Investigator Awards. The Awards have been created to aid young investigators in Canada in attending the 24th Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension to be held in Sydney, Australia from Sept 30 to Oct 4, 2012

Young Investigators in general must be less than 35 years. Exception can be made under appropriate circumstances.

The applicant must satisfy the following requirements:

Must be selected to present either an oral or poster presentation at the 24th Scientific Meeting of the International Society of Hypertension and be present at the 24th Scientific Meeting
Must have trainee status (undergraduate/graduate student, post-doctoral fellow).

Amount of subsidy: $1,000 Canadian Funds
